Summer Vacation Ideas : Sun and Sand on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

Every summer, we try to incorporate new family vacation destinations. Two years ago, (and again last summer, since we enjoyed it!), we took a road trip down south and visited Hilton Head Island in South Carolina. I have shared before in my blogs that I plan adventure and relaxing vacations … This was definitely a relaxing vacation! It reminded me of Cape Cod,  MA with a road trip adventure for our family , since we were traveling from New England. Read on to find out great tips if planning a vacation to Hilton Head!

Here are travel suggestions for families traveling to Hilton Head Island, SC :

  1. Book a family friendly resort! While researching Hilton Head, we wanted to find a family friendly resort (and pet-friendly, since our dog was joining our road trip!), along with beach front, lagoon pools, and fun resort activities. After researching on Tripadvisor, we found the Omni Resort in Hilton Head which satisfied our family’s needs (we liked it so much that we booked the same resort when we went back the following year!) The hotel offered kids’ camp, pool side activities, life-sized chess and Jenga lawn games, bike rentals, arts and crafts throughout the day, along with a host of other daily activities. 2. Explore the island by bike.  Hilton Head offers many bike paths for safe family bike rides. We rented our bikes right at our hotel, but visit Hilton Head Outfitters in Palmetto Dunes for bike rentals and bike path access. Click http://hiltonheadoutfitters.com/
  3. Book a tennis or golf match. There are many opportunities to play golf or tennis on the island. If your family doesn’t know how to play, consider taking a lesson.
  4. Music and entertainment fill up the nights! Hilton Head is divided up into “plantations”. Many of the plantations also offer shopping, dining and entertainment for the whole family. Visit Shelter Cove and Harbour Town for weekly  family events. Visit https://www.palmettodunes.com/shelter-cove/shelter-cove-harbour and https://www.seapines.com/resort_activities/harbour_town/
  5. Climb a light house! Visit Harbour Town and climb their historical candy striped lighthouse for breathtaking views! Kids still want to climb, check out an amazing treehouse playground in Harbour Town near the lighthouse. Visit http://harbourtownlighthouse.com . image
  6. Catch a hermit crab race! Eat dinner at The Crazy Crab and watch the hermit crab races! Visit http://thecrazycrab.com .
  7. Shells, Crabs and Dolphins! Comb the beaches for shells and other ocean life, and maybe you’ll spot dolphins in the wild!
  8. Visit Savannah, GA for the day! About a one-hour drive from Hilton Head, Savannah is nice option for a break from the beach. We booked a trolley tour which gave us a brief and informative overview of the town. The tour shared history, pop culture (where Forest Gump’s park bench is located and Paula Dean’s Restaurant to name a few), Girl Scout Headquarters, and many other locations. It was also pet-friendly, which our dog appreciated! A visit to Leopold’s campuses ice cream shop will not disappoint anyone! Visit https://www.leopoldsicecream.com   ! (Tip: Stop by a local farm stand on your way to pick up some sweet Georgia peaches!)
